He established a large botanical garden in Lyon, where over 10,000 different varieties were cultivated (Natural History Museum, Global Plants Database, Jstor). The present work, considered his masterpiece, was disrupted when his assistant Jules Fourreau died in 1870. Still unfinished at Jordan's death, the final volume was seen through the press by Camille A.
