The scarce first edition of this 'Christmas Sketch' by Wilkie Collins, inspired indubitably by the success of Dickens' Christmas Books and utilising a similar format. The frontispiece is by the Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais, a friend of the author, supposedly a witness to the events that inspired The Woman in White (1859).

First edition; 8vo; frontispiece by John Everett Millais, 4pp. advertisements; small nick and corner crease to bottom edge of p. 7, very occasional mild soiling, mostly to preliminary and terminal pages; publisher's blue cloth, hinges and spine (darkened) professionally restored, a few, mild spots to endpapers, otherwise a good copy in all.
