Beckett had great difficulty in finding an English publisher for this extraordinary vision of loneliness, written in France during the war, when Beckett had taken refuge in Roussillon (Vaucluse), working the day as a farm worker and writing at night. The work is considered the most 'Irish' of his writings by many, and one of his funniest, with its little verses, impossible lists of names, etc.
