Fine copy of these ‘complete’ works, the basis for all editions until the Revolution and including actually all works which Dostoevskiy (1821-81) felt to be his best. The present publication is the fifth issue (‘fourth edition’) of the posthumous complete works prepared with the co-operation of A.G. Dostoevskaya, the author’s wife; they include 147 letters written by Dostoevskiy to various people and a short, updated biography by V. Rozanov.
With provenance: bound for the English writer Maurice Baring (1874-1945). His bookplate was designed by his friend, the prolific writer Hilaire Belloc, met in Oxford in 1897, and who wrote on the ex-libris “Here goes a ship with a cargo of books to the City of Dreams”. Interestingly, Baring’s first significant publication related to Russia, being the 1905 ‘With the Russians in Manchuria’; he edited also ‘The Oxford Book of Russian Verse.
