Ulloa, an officer in the Spanish navy, undertook this voyage to make scientific measurements concerning the shape of the Earth. In the present edition, these scientific observations are omitted to better concentrate on the places and peoples encountered. The edition also contains Adams’ valuable observations on Brazil, not present in the Spanish original (1748).
Fourth edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., xxvii, 479; iv, 419, [xiv] pp., folding map, 6 folding plates, very occasional light spotting, nineteenth century half calf gilt, red and green morocco labels, a very handsome example.
