First edition, first issue (dedication dated 20. September). 8vo, [16], [6 (list of subscribers)], [2 (blank)], 286, [2 (publisher’s advertisement, blank)], with a hand-coloured copper-engraved frontispiece and 20 partly hand-coloured copper-engraved plates on 17 sheets; light spotting passim, small marginal mark to pl. 1; contemporary British speckled calf, spine ruled in gilt, gilt morocco lettering-piece, edges roll-tooled in gilt; edges a little rubbed, corners bumped, a few small scuffs, nonetheless a very good copy with fine provenance.

Provenance: ink inscription to front free flyleaf verso (“Given to Me by Mr Powell 1780”) – Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, later King of Hannover (1771-1851, armorial bookplate to upper pastedown, dating to between 1799 and 1837) – pencil drawing of a mounted soldier to front free endpaper.
