Mrs Leonowens served at the Court of King Mongkut of Siam as teacher to the Royal wives and offspring between 1862 and 1867. She was the inspiration for Margaret Landon’s novel Anna and the King of Siam (1944), which in turn inspired Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s work The King and I.
