A scarce compilation of Conan Doyle short stories, seemingly the only collected edition thus to be published under this title. The title story is considered to be the author’s first fiction of a spiritualist nature, a subject he was to become increasingly interested in, culminating perhaps with his purporting the Cottingley Fairy photographs of Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths to be clear and visible evidence of psychic phenomena.
First & only edition under this particular title, 8vo, occasional light foxing, otherwise internally very good, publisher’s pale green cloth with gothic design blocked in black to upper cover, slight rubbing, bumping and toning but overall a very good copy.
