Description

Tight beaded corsets indicate the men’s position within the Dinka tribe; each age group wears a colour coded corset. A red and blue corset indicates a man between fifteen and 25 years of age. The corsets are removed with marriage. Also visible is the grey ash, which the men dust themselves with – providing protection against flies and lethal malarial mosquitoes and also considered a mark of beauty.
Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher are world-renowned photographers who have dedicated their lives to recording the traditional cultures of Africa. Having met in the early 1980s, they travelled across 270,000 miles, through remote corners of 40 countries exploring more than 150 African cultures.
