This entertaining work on palm trees is dedicated to Alexander Humboldt.
Berthold Carl Seemann ( 1825- 1871) was a German botanist and botannical collector who travelled widely. He became the botanist for the expedition of H. M. S. Herald (1845-1851) on the recommendation of Sir William Hooker and during the expedition, he collected many specimens along the western coast of North and South America. In the 1860s he then returned to Central and South America to study botany in greater detail. He eventually died in Nicaragua in 1871. [WIkipedia]
