In 1872 Burton accepted a private offer to explore the sulphur mining potential of Iceland. He visited Reykjavik, sailed to Hofsos on the north coast via Stykkisholmar, Isafjordur, and Bordeyri; travelled to the Hekla volcano and the geyser at Reykir; and visited the Myvatn sulphur mines near Reykjahlid via Djupivogr.
