First edition of these lovely illustrations of Central Asia showing deserts, daily life, villages and monuments after drawings by Zaleski during his nine-year stay in South-Eastern Russia. The title is misleading: his sketches actually depict what is also nowadays Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan with the Caspian and Aral seas. This account covers as well the vegetation and animal life, and the attempts at farming on the fertile bank of the Aral.
Landscape folio (33 x 45 cm)., 68 pp., with a frontispiece and 21 etching plates engraved by Beilet and Forestier after Zaleski’s drawings; light spotting, Modern half straight-grained claret morocco over red cloth, gilt lettering to upper cover, flat spine ruled in blind; wear to spine, numbered label to cover.
