One of the last of Chagall’s works inspired by the Bible.

These 30 etched illustrations are printed on a yellow-ochre background opposite a fragment from the relevant psalm in French.

King David was a favourite Biblical hero of Chagall’s, partly because his own brother, who died of tuberculosis in Crimea, was named David.

First edition. 4to (28 x 21.5 cm). No. 114 of 175 copies. Signed in pencil by Chagall on colophon leaf. 66, [10] pp., 30 full-page etchings with aquatint on ochre-coloured vélin d’arches. Publisher’s gilt-lettered vellum and slipcase.
