Aubry, a member of the Ecole royale de cavalerie, is the first to ‘bring together the charm of the picturesque with the most rigourous respect of the rules’ (Introduction).

The whole work was offered for 96 francs in the coloured version, twice the price of the black and white issue.


First edition. Two parts in one volume folio (55 x 40 cm). Black lithograph title, engraved title printed in red and black, letterpress introduction within a lithograph frame printed in red and black, 24 hand-coloured lithographs lettered A-Z, [1] text leaf within elaborate lithographed frame; some spotting in text leaves, plates in fresh condition. Contemporary straight-grained half roan by Schaeck (?) with his (cropped?) stamp at the spine foot, flat spine lettered and tooled in gilt, marbled boards and endpapers; extremities rubbed, skilfully rebacked preserving spine.
