Fifth edition of ‘the most important biological book ever written’ (Freeman), produced in a print-run of 2000 copies. This was the first edition to employ Herbert Spencer’s phrase ‘The survival of the fittest’.
Fifth edition, with additions and corrections, tenth thousand, 8vo., xxiii, 596pp., folding plate, 32pp. publisher’s catalogue at end dated September 1868, contemporary ownership inscription at head of half-title, black-coated endpapers, original green cloth, hinges pulling slightly, worn at corner-tips, slightly rubbed at joints, minor speckling to lower cover, but overall a very good, sound copy.
