A first edition of one of the most well-known horror books by Dennis Wheatley, numbered alongside The Devil Rides Out (1935), The Haunting of Toby Jugg (1948) and The Satanist (1960) amongst his canon of diabolical & devilish tales. The inscription on the title-page is to his proof-reader Derek Bradley, “For Derek Bradley With most grateful thanks for his invaluable help with the proofs of this book. From his friend Dennis Wheatley”.

The illustrator Frank C. Papé created dust-jacket artwork for the first editions of several Dennis Wheatley novels, including The Devil Rides Out, Strange Conflict, The Haunting of Toby Jugg and To the Devil – a Daughter, as well as designing Wheatley’s well-known bookplate, depicting a young Wheatley at the feet of Gordon Eric Gordon-Tombe in the role of Lucifer in the Garden of Eden.


First edition, signed presentation copy from the author; 8vo; map endpapers; publisher’s black cloth, slight shelf-lean and rubbing to extremities, dust-jacket with illustration by Frank C. Papé, edge wear, slight fraying to spine ends, some loss to fore-corners.
