This work was privately printed in a scarce limited edition by William McKnight Docharty, a well-known Scottish hillwalker.and member of the SMC ( Scottish Mountaineering Club).
The first volume of this set contains tables and panoramas of British and Irish mountains. The two supplementary volumes which were issued later in 1962 also contain some views of the Alps.
This particular copy is inscribed to Ronald Burn who is considered by many to be the first Munroist ( the first person to climb all the Munros in Scotland). In the letter to Burn ( tipped in the supplementary volume I), Docharty writes “It is only now that I am able to send you copy no. 20 of the supplement to the 1954 work.”.The dedication to Ronald Burn reads “To Ronald Burn in appreciation of his being the first to achieve the ascent of all the separate Mountains and their “tops”…. with every good wish from Willie Docharty”.
First memento edition . 3 vols, 8vo ( 26 x 19 cms) , pp.123, 208, 215-259, numerous photographiic plates including the frontispieces in each volume, 27 black and white folding panoramas ( one panorama discreetly repaired with tape on reverse), dedication to Ronald Burn written in ink and signed by author inside all vols., vol 2 contains a letter (tipped in ) and Christmas card (inserted loose) from the author and vol 3 an envelope (tipped in), addressed to Ronald Burn in author’s handwriting , library stamps of “The Dominican Fathers, Edinburgh”, neat ink annotations throughout, publisher’s green cloth gilt, dustwrappers, ( small tear to wrapper on vol 1); overall a fine set.
