Description

Chesney arrived in Constantinople at the end of the Russo-Turkish war. He was persuaded to survey Egypt and Syria. This was a decision of some moment as he was the first to prove the feasability of the Suez Canal.

Second edition. 8vo., xl, 448pp., 16 pages ads dated March 1854 at end, two folding maps, light spotting to title, original blindstamped green cloth gilt, gilt crescent to upper cover, joints just cracked but firm, light fade to spine, an excellent copy.
