Description

The second impression of the Faber edition of this important work originally published in 1929 on James Joyce’s book Finnegans Wake, at that time being published in discrete sections under the title Work in Progress. This copy is both significant and highly collectable due to the signature of various original contributors to the work (a rapidly diminishing group by the time of this edition in 1961), strangely all with surnames beginning with ‘B’, namely Samuel Beckett, Marcel Brion, Frank Budgen, and Sylvia Beach. Of these signatures the most obviously collectable would perhaps appear to be that of Beckett, but in fact it is the signature of Sylvia Beach that is the most uncommon and sought-after. Beach was of course famous as the early champion of Joyce, in particular his then controversial novel Ulysses, which she had originally published through her Paris bookshop Shakespeare & Company.
