JAMES, the Rev. John Thomas.

Views in Russia, Sweden, Poland and Germany.

London, John Murray, 1826-27.

A fine example of these atmospheric views lithographed by James himself, so ‘that they might not be subjected to such changes and variations of detail as too often occur when the original drawing and the print that is taken from it are furnished by different hands’ (preface).

Abbey states there was no title-page issued as the book was unfinished and Sweden, Poland and Germany are ‘crowded into the last part’, with 16 of the 21 plates devoted to Russia. Among other they include views of Mikhail Palace, the Kremlin, Kitaigorod, Nevsky Prospect, Borodino, Smolensk, Kiev and St Petersburg boulevards.

First edition. Folio (46 x 29.5 cm), Five parts bound in one. Preface [2] pp., 21 hand-coloured lithographs mounted on tinted paper as issued; original upper wrapper part 1 bound in as title, modern half calf over old cloth boards, old morocco label to upper cover, an excellent example.
