One of twenty-five proof copies of the first edition of Gell’s second Pompeiana, ‘intended, not only to supply the omissions of the former work but to describe those more recent discoveries, which are by no means inferior in interest or singularity’. Copiously illustrated with engravings after Gell’s own sketches, the present work describes the discoveries at Pompeii since the publication of the first work in 1819.
This first edition was issued in several states, both octavo and quarto, with only twenty-five copies on royal deluxe quarto with proofs on India paper.
