First edition of the principal work of Sir William Gell (1777-1836), with a great many of his sketches of the archaeological discoveries at Pompeii and Herculaneum. ‘Gell had obtained from the government special facilities for visiting the excavations, and made very numerous sketches (reproduced in the volumes) of objects which he declared would otherwise have perished unrecorded’ (ODNB).
First edition; 4to, (dimensions); engraved frontispiece, 3 maps (of which 2 folding), double-page view of Pompei, and 77 plates (of which one hand-coloured), with numerous wood-engraved vignettes in-text; very occasional slight spotting, damp-stain to later leaves; contemporary straight-grained purple morocco, borders roll-tooled in gilt and blind, spine richly gilt in compartments between flat bands, lettered directly in gilt, board-edges and turn-ins triple-filleted in gilt, edges gilt, French end-bands, ribbon place-marker; rubbed at extremities with a few minor scuffs, lightly bumped, nonetheless an attractive, broad-margined copy; , [vii]-xxxi, , 273pp., [1 (blank)], .
