A fine set of the English edition of Sonnini's travels in Egypt.

An important work. Sonnini had received instructions from Louis XVI to explore Egypt, and he spent three years travelling through the country, getting as far as Aswan. He then went on to Greece and Turkey, returning to France in 1780. Sonnini's major interest was natural history, having studied with Buffon, and he produced a new edition of his works in 127 volumes. He was also responsible for introducing many new vegetables and herbs into France, cultivating them at his gardens at Manoncourt. This he did, until he was ruined by the French Revolution, at which point, he turned to writing to support himself.
