One of the rare deluxe copies.

The standard version of the Egyptian printing of this official history, was issued in stiff buff wraps with a red cloth spine. Some contributors however were given copies bound in sand coloured cloth with gilt blocking to the spine. Three copies (including Allenby's) were apparently bound in full red morocco. O'Brien notes that 'other copies are bound in 3 4 leather'. He gives no further details. Our copy is one of these deluxe copies and was for the chief map-maker for the book, J. H. W. Rowntree. We have not previously handled an example.

Note the ad personam slip is pasted upside down at the rear of the book. Loosely insert are two small, contemporary photographs of and human and camel caravan the latter of which is inscribed on the verso, 'Camels (Ships of the Desert) on the march proceeding to the line with fodder

Description

First edition, first impression, collaborator's copy with the partially printed slip pasted in at the end signed by Pirie Gordon and with the typed name of J.H.W. Rowntree. Half red morocco over red cloth sides, decoration and titles to spine gilt, textured endpapers. Cloth just a little marked, tips a trifle rubbed but an excellent copy.
