Folio (57.5 x 44.2 cm), chromolithographic additional title, hand-coloured tinted lithographic frontispiece and 30 hand-coloured plates by Lemoine, Lehnert, Mouilleron, Le Roux and others after Prisse d'Avennes, printed by Lemercier, all mounted on card and loose as issued, titled in pencil below image. Letterpress title, dedication, plate list and 60 pp. of descriptive text by St. John with 35 wood-engraved illustrations, original plain wrappers. Original morocco-backed portfolio with gilt-lettered morocco cover label, rebacked, flaps with morocco renewed, new ties, minor wear to card edges and corners, old waterstain to end leaves, portfolio covers rubbed and a little worn, plates clean and fresh, a very good copy.

Sheet size (double-page): c.725 x 520 mm (or the reverse). Watermarks examined include the shield with sword and fleur-de-lys (Robison 61), a fleur-de-lys with initials (Robison 20 / 21), a fleur-de-lys within a single circle (Robison 18 / 19) however the majority of those present appear to be the fleur-de-lys within a double circle (Robison 33 / 35).
Full contemporary polished calf, rebacked, boards with triple-ruled borders and floral corner pieces in gilt, banded spines with gilt tooling and black leather label with gilt title in nine compartments, turn-ins tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. Repairs to edges and corners. An excellent example.£65,000 -
