  1. Limited edition, number 4 of 200 large paper copies, signed by both the author and the illustrator; 4to (230 x 190 mm); printed on hand-made paper, illustrations by E.H. Shepard, folding map at rear; publisher's green cloth-backed boards, paper label on spine, leaves uncut, printed dust-jacket, endpapers slightly browned, extremities and spine label slightly spotted, dust-jacket with two small closed tears at spine ends, otherwise a fine copy preserved in a custom made blue cloth solander box.

  2. First edition thus, number XXI of XXV hors commerce copies, from an overall limitation of 250 copies; 16mo; comprising printed introductory booklet signed & numbered in pencil by Maurice Sendak, with additional pencil signature of printing historian Iain Bain, in original printed wrappers, 34 line block illustrations printed in brown ink on Arches paper, each with pencil limitation details and printed monogram of Alecto Historical Editions on verso, with tissue guard, each loose in separate printed card sleeve; together housed in original cloth drop-back box with inset illustration on upper cover and gilt label on spine, a fine copy.

  3. First edition; oblong 4to; 32 full-page, colour illustrations, numerous sepia decorations within text; publisher's quarter cloth over colour-illustrated boards, near-contemporary ink ownership to front free endpaper, mild rubbing to extremities, some very mild age-creasing to paper covering boards, otherwise exceptionally clean and original, extremely scarce thus.

  4. 4 volumes, 8vo., engraved frontispiece, 4 engraved plates (1 folding), fine polished calf, spines gilt in compartments with red and green labels to each, marbled edges and endpapers, a fine set.

  5. 15 volumes, 8vo., EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with about 145 engraved plates by S. and E. Harding, Millton Park stamp to each volume, occasional browning and off-setting, mostly to margins and verso of plates, near-contemporary straight-grained light brown morocco, all edges gilt, a little rubbed and bumped at extremities, otherwise a very good and readable set.

  6. First Stockdale edition and the first edition to be illustrated by Thomas Stothard, 2 volumes; large 8vo; 14 engraved plates after Thomas Stothard by Medland, author portrait prior to the Life of Defoe, contemporary straight-grained crimson morocco, boards with wide border of gilt fillets and roll tools, spine compartments with floral design made up of pointillé tools, green morocco title labels and volume numbers directly lettered, gilt turn-ins and edges, title-page and frontispiece to vol. I with small burn repair to each in outer margin, occasional spotting or light browning, without the list of subscribers, board edges lightly rubbed, a few minor ink spots on covers of vol. I, otherwise a very good set; 389; 456pp.

  7. Atlantic edition, 28 volumes, 8vo., limited to 1050 sets for the U. S. A.), signed by the author, photogravure frontispiece to each volume, modern burgundy half-morocco gilt, original spine labels tipped-in at rear, a complete and very handsome set.

  8. 18mo. Engraved frontispiece, engraved portrait of Jeanne d'Arc and 18 engraved plates (the so-called 'suite anglaise' by Marillier), tissue guards; mild foxing scattered throughout, ink ownership stamp 'Charron' on blank recto of frontispiece, contemporary blue silk endpapers. Contemporary red morocco, gilt fillet borders to covers, spine with gilt decorative compartments, gilt edges; slightly marked and rubbed with superficial wear to head of spine and one corner.

  9. Large paper copy. 4 volumes, 4to. (30 x 24 cm), engraved portrait frontispiece, engraved vignettes and initials, contemporary English red morocco, covers with wide, gilt borders of dotted lines, rolls, and foliate designs interspersed with crowns, spines extra gilt in six compartments, gilt outer edges, edges and dentelles, neat repairs to extremities, a very handsome set.

  10. Limited edition, 8vo, one of 350 copies. Translated by Walter Widmer; 5 coloured woodcuts by Felix Hoffmann; typography by Jan Tschichold. Original vellum, gilt. A lovely copy in the original orange card slipcase.
