Burns Night 2021

  1. 21 vols, Sml. 8vo (180 x 130 mm (7 1/4 x 5 in); small, marginal corner stain affecting poart of one vol. (When a Man's Single), otherwise clean and bright; publisher's full blue calf, spines gilt, author's gilt monogram to front covers, top edge gilt, near-fine.

  2. First edition, folio (55 x 38.4 cm.), Printed title, two leaves with 'List of the Plans, &c.' in double columns listing 160 plates and 180 engraved plates numbered 1 - 160, including the unnumbered plates 71 and 148 and 20 'bis' plates with duplicate numbers, 20 double-page and one large folding plate on two sheets; plates mounted on paper tabs (from sheets of the same worký) throughout, the title and text leaves on wove paper with the watermark '1809', the plates on laid paper with the watermark 'LLAR' and a fleur-de-lys countermark and others as per RIBA, the sheets retaining deckle edges throughout. Sheet size: c. 53.4 x 35.6 cm; double-page plates: c. 53.4 x 71.2 cm; title and text: 51.8 x 35.8 cm. Contemporary calf-backed marbled paper boards, later protective box.

  3. First edition. 4to, xii, lxxvi, 590pp., errata leaf, contemporary half calf gilt, marbled boards, joints repaired, a very good copy.

  4. 18 bright and fresh watercolours, most of Scottish Lowland scenery, including coastal loch and sea views, and a few continental lakeside views, each average 17.5 x 25 cm (7 x 10 inches), on stiff wove paper mounted at corners to album leaves, along with several other pencil drawings, two with monochrome washes, by Burgess, including an excellent tree study, and his pupil, Lady Harriett Kerr, 3 initialled by her, mostly further continental landscapes, contained in a half-calf album, 4to. The watercolours in good, clean condition, the drawings generally likewise, the binding rubbed, corners slightly worn, calf spine sunned, cloth boards also unevenly faded.

  5. First edition of the author's first book; 8vo; title printed in red & black, Christmas gift inscription and sticker to half-title; publisher's red & black cloth, an excellent copy, in the original dust-jacket minor wear to a few corners, but overall fine.

  6. First edition, first printing; 8vo; marginal toning to text-block as often; publisher's boards, dust-jacket, a fine copy.

  7. First (only) edition. 4to, [iv], 20, [ii], 22, 88, 16, 16, 14pp., half-title, contents leaf, 3 engraved maps, 2 folding, extra-illustrated with a large folding chart of the Atlantic on thicker paper, contemporary sprinkled calf gilt, red morocco label, half-title browned, joints rubbed, some browning towards the end, 2 leaves (in the Extrait) with paper repairs to lower margin not affecting text, a very good copy.

  8. First edition. 5 volumes, 4to., engraved title vignettes, three large folding maps, 55 engraved plates including 53 natural history studies, four leaves of Ethiopian script, small paper flaw to blank margin page 27 volume V, very occasional light foxing, contemporary calf gilt, neat repairs to extremities, a fine, fresh set.

  9. Original hand-coloured aquatint, 48 .5 x 66 cm, 'drawn on the spot by I. Clark', thin faint stain outside image (from previous framingý), a good example.

  10. 4 mezzotints printed in colours, signed in lower left in pencil. Dimensions: (65 x 38.5 cm); (66 x 40 cm); (66 x 91cm); (66 x 40.5 cm).
