A selection of the rare books we will be displaying at this year's Firsts London Rare Book Fair, taking place this October at the renowned Saatchi Gallery on the King's Road, Chelsea.

  1. Natural History of Birds: first edition, first issue. 3 vols; 4to; 306 hand-coloured copper engraved plates. Natural History of English Insects: fifth edition, title page, dedication, [4pp] preface, 100 copper plates with original hand colour, each with descriptive text, (unnumbered) each plate numbered. Offsetting from plates to text (stronger in Insects), occasional light foxing and browning (again a little more so in Insects), contemporary green straight-grain morocco gilt by Kalthoeber with his ticket, all edges gilt, light rubbing to joints, a fine set.

First edition; 8vo (22.5 x 14.5 cm); engraved portrait frontispiece, slightly spotted, 4 folding maps at rear, all edges gilt, green silk endpapers, edged in gilt; contemporary green morocco ornately decorated in gilt with the arms of Napoleon III on spine and boards, gilt lettered and signed by the binder J. Despierres on the spine; a fine copy; viii, 416 pp.

  4. First edition in French, small quarto [xxiv], 191, [i], 235, [i], 230, [i] pp., engraved title vignette, 50 plates in the letterpress, 2 full-page, later (nineteenth/twentieth century) calf gilt, an excellent example.

  6. First edition. 8vo, viii, 245 pp., 6 engraved plates, of which 2 folding, modern French red crushed morocco in Jansenist style, raised bands, lettered in gilt with small monogram to foot of spine, broad gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt, an excellent example.

First edition; 2 vols, 4to, (329 x 265 mm); complete with 14 lithographic plates, 112 woodcuts, 5 maps, 31 engraved plates of fossils, 9 folding hand-coloured geological sections signed by the author, some pages lightly spotted,second vol contains large, hand-coloured engraved 3 sheet folding map signed by Murchison of 'The Silurian Region and Adjacent Counties of England & Wales, Geologically Illustrated', also containing a 'map of England and Wales, Coloured according to Geological Systems', 28 compartments, (976 x 1633 mm), backed on red silk edged linen, with autographed letter signed 'Rodk Murchison' to the French naturalist Dr Henri Milne-Edwards, asking for an 'account of the Serpulina formed shelly body' for his description of the Ludlow rocks; fine contemporary calf binding with red morocco labels on decorated spine, gilt ruled boards with ornithological motif gilt stamped on upper cover, corners of boards and spine slightly bumped; 768pp, overall a very good copy.

Manuscript; folio, (470 x 330 mm); approx. 225 watercolour illustrations by E. de Payan du Moulin, with manuscript titles and together with 25pp description of geological expeditions in the area of Dauphine (Rhône-Alpes) and to Labedoule Conte de Roquefort in May, many illustrations drawn on card and laid down, some spotting and light soiling; vellum binding, spine chipped with loss at foot.

First edition; 4to (33 x 25 cm); signed and inscribed by the author on the upper fly leaf to Isaar Saulovich Gurvich-Issarov, dated 1930; chromolithographic title and 34 full-page chromolithographic illustrations; modern full morocco binding with design to match the original cover, gilt title to spine, original covers bound in (upper cover window mounted), minor spotting to a few plates but overall an excellent example.
