Febbraio 1757.pp.40, pp. xi ('Spiegazione' and 'Osservazioni'), pp.iii ('Indice, O Sia Spiegazione'), pp.iv ('Indice'), pp.iii ('Indice'), pp.(ii) ('Repertorio'). Engraved frontispiece portrait of Piranesi by Polanzani, printed title, engraved double-page dedication plate with text 'Utilitati Publicae' (second state after the removal of 'Lord Charlemont'), Piranesi's text and 44 engraved plates plus 1 map, of which 5 are double-page, 1 large folding plate on two sheets, 2 folding plates on 1 sheet and 30 single page plates with two images;
    Vol. II: engraved title, engraved double-page frontispiece and engraved list of subjects and 60 engraved plates, numbered I - LXIII (including title, frontispiece and list of subjects), of which 44 are double-page and one large double-page folding plate on 2 sheets;
    Vol. III: engraved title and engraved double-page frontispiece and 52 plates, numbered I - LIV (including title and frontispiece), of which 42 are double-page and one large double-page folding plate on 2 sheets (four plates are by Girolamo Rossi and one by an anonymous artist);
    Vol. IV: engraved title, engraved double-page frontispiece and engraved list of subjects and 57 plates.
    Sheet size (double-page): c.725 x 520 mm (or the reverse). Watermarks examined include the shiled with sword and fleur-de-lys (Robison 61), a fleur-de-lys with initials (Robison 20 / 21), a fleur-de-lys within a single circle (Robison 18 / 19) however the majority of those present appear to be the fleur-de-lys within a double circle (Robison 33 / 35).
    Full contemporary polished calf, rebacked, boards with triple-ruled borders and floral corner pieces in gilt, banded spines with gilt tooling and black leather label with gilt title in nine compartments, turn-ins tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. Repairs to edges and corners. An excellent example.

  2. Landscape folio (30 x 42.2 cm), engraved title, dedication to Doge Luigi Mocenigo dated 27 May 1703, 103 numbered etched views by Carlevaris, puncture marks to the centre-verso of plate 103 running through to plate 95, with associated small holes to plates 100-103, occasional faint soiling and browning, contemporary panelled calf, gilt spine with red morocco label, speckled edges; rebacked preserving spine.

  3. First edition. Folio. 28 lithograph plates, original wrapper as title, modern half calf, marbled boards, an excellent clean copy.

  4. First edition, 4to (41 x 33 cm), large paper copy, early issue with pre-publication watermarks, folding map, 24 aquatint plates in 2 states, monochrome on india paper and hand coloured, 2 hand coloured vignettes, by R.G. Reeve (13), C. Bentley (5), J. Bailey and J. Fielding, after Westall (19) and Owen; usual light offsetting to plates, contemporary green half russia gilt, rebacked preserving spine, rubbed, all edges gilt, an excellent example.

  5. First trade edition, first issue with date on title-page and a single-page endpaper repeated four times; 16mo; 27 full-page colour illustrations, title vignette and pictorial endpapers by the author; publisher's dark green boards with inset colour illustration, presented in later cloth solander box.

  6. First edition, first impression; 8vo; very light toning to text-block but overall internally fine; publisher's cloth, minor bumping to corners, otherwise fine, in the original first issue dust-jacket designed by Youngman Carter, price removed from from both flaps, presumably for gift presentation, neat conservational restoration to fore-edge folds, corners and spine ends but in effect an excellent example of this iconic dust-jacket.

  7. 12 watercolour and gouache studies on pith paper, framed by blue silk ribbon, all mounted, overall dimensions 33 x 23.5cm., framed and glazed.

  8. First edition; 8vo; internally fine; publisher's cloth, a sharp, tight copy, first state dust-jacket correctly priced at 7/6, browning to spine with central stain, chipped at spine ends fore-corners, upper panel chipped and creased at top edge with slight loss, but overall a good plus example.

  9. First edition; 8vo; bookplate removed from front pastedown, overall internally in fine condition; publisher's cloth, an attractive, sharp and undulled copy, in the original first issue dust-jacket correctly priced at 7'6, browning to spine, small closed tears to corners, otherwise a very good example.

  10. First edition, 8vo, publisher's black cloth, spine and upper side stamped in silver and metallic red, dust-jacket designed by Richard Chopping, unclipped, rear panel a little dust soiled, slight rubbing at extremities, otherwise a bright and very good-plus copy.
