Second work: First edition. complete but with erratic pagination (pages 136-139 not used), contemporary mottled calf gilt, red sprinkled edges, vol. II lacks label, spines rubbed, light wear to tops of spines, a very good set.

First edition, folio (55 x 38.4 cm.), Printed title, two leaves with 'List of the Plans, &c.' in double columns listing 160 plates and 180 engraved plates numbered 1 - 160, including the unnumbered plates 71 and 148 and 20 'bis' plates with duplicate numbers, 20 double-page and one large folding plate on two sheets; plates mounted on paper tabs (from sheets of the same worký) throughout, the title and text leaves on wove paper with the watermark '1809', the plates on laid paper with the watermark 'LLAR' and a fleur-de-lys countermark and others as per RIBA, the sheets retaining deckle edges throughout. Sheet size: c. 53.4 x 35.6 cm; double-page plates: c. 53.4 x 71.2 cm; title and text: 51.8 x 35.8 cm. Contemporary calf-backed marbled paper boards, later protective box.

First edition, limited to 150 copies on hand-made paper, 3 vols., 8vo, lii, [1], 434; xvi, [1], 433; xvi, [1], 501pp., 125 illustrations including frontispieces, 4 maps, 1 folding plan at rear of volume 3, publisher's quarter vellum gilt over green cloth, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, dust-soiling to spines, some cracking with minor loss to that of vol. i, all a little bumped at extremities, edges browned, otherwise a good set.

  5. 18 bright and fresh watercolours, most of Scottish Lowland scenery, including coastal loch and sea views, and a few continental lakeside views, each average 17.5 x 25 cm (7 x 10 inches), on stiff wove paper mounted at corners to album leaves, along with several other pencil drawings, two with monochrome washes, by Burgess, including an excellent tree study, and his pupil, Lady Harriett Kerr, 3 initialled by her, mostly further continental landscapes, contained in a half-calf album, 4to. The watercolours in good, clean condition, the drawings generally likewise, the binding rubbed, corners slightly worn, calf spine sunned, cloth boards also unevenly faded.

Folio (37.5 x 26.5 cm.), plates watermarked 1808-1817, 105pp., 38 plates and plans comprising 10 hand-coloured aquatints, 4 of these folding, 28 uncoloured line engravings, 2 of these with touches of aquatint, and 5 folding, light soiling plate 5, large folding plate of Tew Lodge with dusty fore-edge and neat archival repairs to edge, modern green half morocco gilt over marbled boards, an excellent example.
