TEFAF Maastricht 2023 Highlights

The 'South Seas' issue; 2 vols bound as one; folio (35.5 x 29 cm, 14 x 11.5 in); two armorial bookplates to front pastedown; hand coloured etched frontispiece, two engraved parallel titles in English and French (the first with imprint also in French), engraved dedication to the King, two engraved explanatory tables, half-title, engraved plate of medals (undated), 80 hand coloured engraved plates numbered in a contemporaneous hand, with two loose contemporaneous single leaf prospectuses in English and French; contemporary full red morocco by L. Staggemeier and Welcher (with ticket), gilt-ruled borders of a Greek key roll and gilt-dotted rule, gilt spine with emblematic and classical tools offset by two green morocco contrasting lettering-pieces, all edges gilt, extremities lightly rubbed, a few minor stains to binding, very occasional spotting internally; 39, [1]pp (pagination begins half-title verso). A very fine copy.

12 hand painted water-colours on pith paper of flowers and insects, within pale blue silk borders. A few cracks and light stains. Framed and glazed, overall dimensions: 37.5cm by 26.5cm by 2cm.

Folio, folio (50 x 37 cm); engraved title page and privilege, 63 plates of which 38 are double-page or folding (lacking plates 5 and 6), lower edge of some leaves restored, traces of dampstaining to lower margin; contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt in compartments, gilt lettering to spine, boards slightly worn, corners rubbed, marbled endpapers, a very good example.

Limited edition, one of 100 copies on Velin d'Arches, signed and numbered by the artist on the justification, large folio (63.5 x 45 cm); title-page, justification and table of contents, 10 pochoir prints in colour after Man Ray, loose as issued and unbound in plain wrappers, minor spotting to wrapper; in the original black cloth solander box with 'Man Ray' on the spine, some minor wear to box otherwise a fine example.

Single fine illuminated miniature painting, ink and watercolour opaque colours on thick buff paper, heightened in gold, loose leaf from a monumental illuminated manuscript, in Awadhi, overall size 555 x 640 mm; text in single column, devanagari script, both sides of leaf framed within intricately painted floral decorative border illuminated in gilt, in a remarkably clean and attractive state of preservation; framed and glazed.

Limited edition, one of 32 examples on japon nacré, signed by the author and artist, from a total edition of 140, folio (38 x 28 cm); 8 etchings in colour after Delaunay, plus an extra suite in colour also on nacré with each plate signed in pencil, an additional signed etching hand-coloured in gouache by the artist, loose as issue, with tissue guards; in the original lithographed chemise and slipcase, a fine example.

Limited edition, one of 25 copies on japon impérial, from a total edition of 345; 4to (24 x 17 cm); translated by André Gide and Jacques Schiffrin, signed 'J. Sch' on the limitation page, foreword by Gide, illustrations in colour by Shukhaev including 7 plates hors-texte, with two additional suites of 19 illustrations each, loose in a separate portfolio, one in colour on japon and one in black on chine, with tissue guards, a.e.g.; 20th century fine binding by Hélène Cauchetier, full green morocco with original wrappers bound in, upper cover with playing card motif inlay design of various colours, doublures with green patterned paper guards, green marbled endpapers, chemise and slipcase, extra suites in a corresponding chemise, an excellent example.

A group of six stipple engravings, printed in colours and finished by hand, with good strong colour. Framed and glazed, overall size: 40.6 by 55.7cm.
