Fine binding. Facsimile reproduction of the 1842 edition

Boys (1803-1874) learnt the art of lithography in Paris at the same time as Prout and Bonnington. Along with Parrot's London from the Thames, Boys' lithographs provide the definitive record of London in the 1840s, as well as being one of the last great illustrated books on the city to compare with Malton's Picturesque Tour and Ackermann's Microcosm. 'A book of considerable importance; apart from the beauty of its plates, it records London at a period when good pictorial records were few' (Abbey).

The 1954-1955 facsimile reproduction of Boys' Views of London by Traylen incorporates new descriptions and historical notes by James Laver, an art historian and curator who was Keeper of Prints, Drawings and Paintings at the Victoria & Albert Museum from 1938-1959. These notes are set alongside Ollier's 1842 observations and provide an important re-contextualisation of Boys' work in the light of the twentieth century and the great changes wrought to the city landscape by the London Blitz. Our copy is beautifully bound in a full rich red morocco with gilt decoration to the spine, borders and edges.

Two volumes bound as one, folio, (51 x 39 cm); 26 full page colour plates by offset lithography from the 1842 originals, very occasional spotting to margins; near contemporary rich full red morocco with gilt spine (slight fading), borders and edges, slipcase with minor wear, marbled endpapers. A fine example.

Cf. Adams 196; Abbey (Scenery), 240; Tooley 104; Ray 87.
