A rare anti-weapons flyer published by the Council of Labor Unions of Tsukuba Science City.
Developed between the 1960s and 1980s near Tokyo, Tsukuba is Japan's primary scientific research hub, home to two universities, sixty national institutes, and hundreds of private research facilities.
This flyer was published on May 1st, 1982 in reaction to perceived government efforts to increase military research. The first page is 'A Personal Message from a Research Scientist at Tsukuba', Fumikazu Ikazaki, who recounts his family's experience as 1st and 2nd generation survivors of the bombing of Hiroshima. The following page prints the resolutions of the Council of Labor Unions 'to oppose all military related research'. They state that, 'self-defence force soldiers are beginning to visit the institutes in Tsukuba Science City. The Japanese Government is trying to start military research with the United States... We must never allow the results of our research to be used for war. We must not turn our faces away from the tragedy in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the slaughter in Auschwitz, and what the Japanese army did in China...'.
Flyer, single sheet folded once (30 x 21 cm folded), printed in black on yellow paper, illustration from photograph of the 'Atomic Bomb Dome' on the cover, map on the back, fine condition.
