In contrast to more conventional costume plates, this work shows the people described leading their everyday lives, for example in a national dance, playing a moujik game, spending time with their children, and enjoying village amusements, an entire family dangerously on a see-saw. The text deals with all aspects of religious life in Russia, and all the various sects and religions practised.

First edition; tall 8vo (24 x 26.5 cm); 8 hand-coloured lithograph plates, evidence of removed bookplate to front pastedown, very occasional light spotting to margins and prelims; contemporary full calf, boards blind rolled and gilt triple ruled, gilt spine in six compartments with contrasting gilt lettering piece, board edges and turn-ins gilt rolled, all edges marbled, some light rubbing to spine and edges, a very good copy; [12], 486, [2]pp.

Abbey (Travel), 230; Colas 2395; Tooley 380.
