The second edition, printed one year after the first, of this scarce life of the jurist Sir Matthew Hale (1609-1676).
This copy has an intriguing manuscript note in pen to the recto of the rear free endpaper correcting an anecdote in which Burnet records an incident where Hale seemingly thwarted an attempt to bribe him with a buck of venison that had been sent to his table, with Hale insisting that 'He could not suffer the Tryal to go on, till he had paid him for his Buck' (p.38).
The note relays:
'The yeare story p 37 & 38 hap[e]ned at Derby. SrJ Curson was [the] person presented [the] buck, & twas not his but his grandson Mr Stanhop's cause; my Lady Rockingham sister to my L[or]d Rutland sent a buck & a fat mutton to [the] judge & no notice taken of yt [crossed out sentence] SrJ Curson's name appeared not in [the] record nor would in [the] cause. Sir John in court ordered [the] money to be given to [the] poore & the [?] the record'.
Second edition; 8vo (16.5 x 10 cm); engraved portrait frontispiece, ownership inscription to title-page upper margin, early MS note in pen to rear free endpaper recto, blindstamp to title and first few ff, engraved bookplate to front free endpaper verso partially obscuring previous inscription, hinges split at gutter margins of endpapers; contemporary mottled calf, covers ruled in blind, remains of paper label to spine, slightly rubbed and abraded with minor loss, very good; [16], 128pp.
