Fortunat Piskunov wrote in the foreword that the success of his 1873 edition gave him the courage to produce this second, expanded edition. Piskunov completely rewrote the dictionary over the course of two years and added more than 7000 words to the original 8000.
The lexicon consisted of many archaisms, little-used dialectal words, garbled loanwords, and even Piskunov's neologisms (eg, bylynar 'botanist', vsedijma 'history', hojnyk 'surgeon', hnita 'print'). Piskunov looked to traditional songs and collections of riddles and proverbs compiled by Hatsuk and Nomys for inspiration for words. He also credits Shevchenko, Kulish, Kotliarevsky and Storozhenko and many others for their collections of folk tales. Piskunov was passionate about Ukrainian language and writes that he would gladly devote his whole life to the pursuit of the most complete dictionary possible. He also declares that people who believe that Ukrainian is a dialect of Russian distortion are 'fat and ignorant'.
Second, corrected and significantly expanded edition, 8vo ( 25 x 17 cm); very minor scattered foxing; later brown cloth backed boards with original wrappers pasted on upper and lower boards, edges worn, a good copy; [i], title, v, 304pp, v.
