Margaret Joy Dowson, the wife of Valentine Hugh Wilfred Dowson (1896-1980), was an enthusiastic amateur artist, keenly attached to Iraq and her husband's interest in date palm cultivation. She put this album together for her mother as a New Year's gift, hence the focus on domestic life and the self portraits at the rear. Her depictions of the countryside are mixed with her home undergoing roof repair, and sketches of the Baghdad streets.
From the library of Valentine Hugh Wilfred Dowson (1896-1980). Dowson was an Army Intelligence Officer in Iraq from WWI through to the 1950s, and his collection is largely held by King's College London. His wife Margaret Joy Dowson was an accomplished amateur artist who illustrated the covers of several books.
Oblong small folio (39 x 25 cm); 12 card leaves, with 13 mounted water-colours and pencil sketches and 3 mounted photographs, in original stiff silk tied boards, with black ink title and sketches to upper and lower boards, hinge of upper board reinforced, a little thumbing, some fading to photographs, very good with the paintings clear and bright.
