First edition of the first book devoted entirely to tobacco, promoting it as a universal cure and providing recipes for its use. In an unsophisticated contemporary vellum binding with manuscript titles to the spine. Rare, with only three copies appearing in auction records since 1988. USTC records two variants, one as here, with 246 pages, and the other with 234. No priority is established, and the 246 page variant is rarer institutionally.

The Universal Short Title Catalogue also lists an edition published in 1583 that is identified by one copy at Balliol College, Oxford, but it no longer appears in their catalogue and no copies of that date are located by WorldCat, making it a likely error.

'This little work, produced by a physician who is said to have practised with distinction in Antwerp, appears to have been the first published entirely devoted to the subject of tobacco... a neat compendium of much of the information then available. It was, consequently, popular' (Arents 32).

In addition to the tract on tobacco, Everard's book was published with Castore Durante's work on another New World medicament, the morning glory root, Compendiosa narratio de vsu & praxi radicis mechoacan, as well as Gerard van Bergen's De pestis praeseruatione, and Galen's De theriaca ad Pisonem and De antidotis.

Additionally, this copy is bound with the first edition of Practica Medicinae, by the Swiss physician Johann Jacob Wecker (1528-1586).

First edition; 16mo & 12mo (100 x 75 mm); pen trials and short notes to blanks, Everard: 246pp, typographic design to title, blue ink stain to the lower corner of gatherings O and P, occasional spots and marks; contemporary vellum with yapp fore-edge, manuscript titles to spine, one lower turn-in curling up, vellum a little warped, particularly on the lower board, some marks and dulling, titles faded, very good, unsophisticated condition.

USTC 413734; John Carter Brown Library Rare Americana; Sabin 23218; Adams E1150; Alden 587/15; Arents 32.
