An intriguing reproduction of this important sixteenth-century history by the choleric historian and religious controversialist John Bale (1495-1563).

Bale's Brefe Chronycle is the best source for the life and times of the Lollard conspirator Sir John Oldcastle (d.1417), who led an unsuccessful revolt against the Church in 1414, and was the basis for the character of Sir John Falstaff in Shakespeare's Henry IV Part 1 and 2.

With the engraved frontispiece providing a facsimile of the woodcut title-page to the edition of 1544.

First C. Davis edition; 8vo (23 x 14.5 cm); engraved frontispiece, initials, head and tailpieces, slightly toned with some occasional light spotting, later endpapers; contemporary blind-panelled calf, rebacked, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece covers slightly abraded with minor loss to corners and edges; [2], viii, 157, [1]pp.
