Germany. Rhine from Switzerland to Holland.
The Black Forest, Vosges, Haardt, Odenwald, Taunus, Eifel, Seven Mountains, Nahe, Lahn, Moselle, Ahr, Wupper, and Ruhr.
K. Baedeker, Coblenz. 1861
'Rhine' was the first English Baedeker title to be published and there were eighteen subsequent editions, the last was published in 1926. This title also covers Northern Germany including Berlin and also a short excursion to Copenhagen. This is the last English edition to contain the attractive scenic engraved views. Plans include Bonn, Coblenz, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Strasburg.
Few copies survive and it is therefore very scarce. This copy despite the foxing is still a very good example.
Endpapers dated 'May 1861'.
First edition. xxvii, 260pp, 12 engraved views, 24 maps and plans, most pages with light foxing;as is usual; rebacked preserving most of the publisher's red cloth gilt; overall a very good copy.
