A very scarce early work by Ivan Verkhratsky, one of the most important Ukrainian philologists of the twentieth century. He wrote numerous text books on natural science for Ukrainian school and carried out pioneering studies on regional Ukrainian dialects. In the 1870s Verkhratsky focused more on writing poetry and this work combines the tales and proverbs he came across in his studies with his own creative input. Verkhratsky is also well known for having taught Ivan Franko in Drohobych, recognising his his poetic talent at a young age.
