William Scoresby junior, the great Arctic explorer, was actively engaged on scientific research into magnetism and published several papers on the subject. To further his knowledge he made a voyage to Australia on board the iron-hulled Royal Charter in 1856 to study terrestrial magnetism. His account of the voyage and his researches was published posthumously, and was seen through the press by Archibald Smith.
First edition. 8vo, presentation copy from the publishers (blindstamp to title), xlviii, 315 pp, errata slip, 24 pages ads at end dated October 1858, engraved portrait frontispiece, large folding chart, coloured diagrams in text, original blindstamped blue grained cloth gilt, lightly rubbed, a very good copy.
