Edition of 500. Imitation was published to accompany Moriyama's first solo exhibition at Taka Ishii Gallery, Tokyo, which had opened the year before. The exhibition took place before widespread interest existed in Moriyama and other Japanese photographers outside of Japan. The strong reception to this publication encouraged Taka Ishii to make publishing an important part of their program.
