London, Chatto & Windus, 1963

Signed by the author. Signed first edition of the author's sixth novel, set in a remote area on the west coast of Ireland. The book begins with the arrival of Marian Taylor, a young English school teacher who has accepted a position as governess at an isolated country house called Gaze Castle. She is surprised to learn that there are no children at Gaze, and that she will be teaching French and Italian to the lady of the house, Hannah Crean-Smith.

First edition, first impression, signed by the author; 8vo; very light browning to front endpapers, otherwise unmarked internally; publisher's sage cloth, titles to spine gilt, with the unclipped pictorial dustjacket by Christopher Cornford, spine mildly tanned, light dust-soiling to rear panel, minor edge-wear, else very good.
