A fine detailed map of India and the Burmese coast. The map extends from Turkestan and southern China south to the Maldives, Ceylon and Sumatra. In the east it shows all of Burma and extends westward to Beluchistan. Tibet is referred to as 'Bot or Tibet' with to its west the much-disputed land of 'Cashmere'. The territories are coloured according to a key and include regional provinces and the presence of the British, Portuguese and French.
'In 1857 he founded Stanford's Geographical Establishment... to prepare and engrave his "library maps". He also supplied maps to the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, the National Society, the Metropolitan Board of Works, the Palestine Exploration Fund, and the school board of London' (ODNB).
Engraved hand-coloured map, dissected and laid on linen, folding into publisher's original red cloth boards. Printed publisher's advertisements inside, gilt title to upper cover. 8vo (83.5 by 75cm opened).
