A Map of the Crimea by Ambrose Shardlow. Standard Hill Academy.
1855
The academy was established in Nottingham by the landscape artist William Goodacre (d.1888), who had earlier contributed drawings to a topographical study of the USA published in 1835. This map, by an amateur hand, is very accomplished, showing the major road networks and topographical features of the region.
Manuscript map (40 x 54 cm), pen and black ink, outlined in watercolour, on thick card; light surface dirt and browning, minor spotting; hinged into cloth covered boards of that time, other leaves removed, folio (55.5 x 41 cm); worn with some spotting.
