London, printed by Iohn Dawson for Nath: Butter and Nich: Bourne; s.n., 1632; 1633.

With the rare folding map of the battle lines at Breitenfeild. A scarce pamphlet in four-parts on Swedish military discipline during the Thirty Years' War, bound with an early account of Sweden's costly victory at the Battle of Lützen in 1632.

Swedish Discipline was the first in a series of fifteen pamphlets printed by Butter and Bourne on the Thirty Years' War. It comprises a translation of Johann Philipp Abelin's Arma Suecica attributed to either William Watts or Sir Thomas Roe, the former known for his serial publication The Swedish Intelligencer, the latter for his diplomatic work on behalf of a Protestant Swedish-English alliance, a second part on the orders and articles of war, and a third on the 'Forme of a Commission given out by his Majestie of Sweden, for the levying of a Regiment', suffixed with an account of the aforementioned battle.

Our copy with the rare folding engraved map of the battle-line drawn up at Leipzig (the Battle of Breitenfield) in 1631. A rarity in any state of completion, most references, including Cockle, only call for the 4 woodcut folding plates, and even the Earl of Macclesfield's copy 'apparently' lacked the two maps.

The second pamphlet relates the events of the Battle of Lützen, which took place the following year and cost the life of the Swedish commander, King Gustav II Adolphus, effectively ending Swedish participation in the war. Illustrated with a single engraved folding plate showing 'A true and lively Description of those Townes, Citties, Castles, and Forts, that the King of Sweden hath taken since he came into Germany...'

With excellent provenance for the Royal Military College, and the Barons Cottesloe.

Two works bound in 1; small 4to (20 x 15.5 cm); armorial bookplates to front pastedown and front free endpaper recto; [Swedish Discipline] first edition; H.M. Stationary Office stamp to title, woodcut initials and headpieces, 4 folding plates (of 6, 4 wood-cut, 2 engraved maps), lacking 'Figure for the Fortification of a Towne' and 'Figure of the Battell as it was in Fighting when Tilley was Overthrowing', but with the engraved folding map of the 'Battell of Leipsich' (41 x 50 cm), text continuous despite pagination, small tear to title repaired with archival tape to verso, small hole to head margin of D4 not affecting text; [Lutzen] first edition; folding plate, without blank A1; later sheep, panels ruled in gilt, spine gilt in 6 compartments, all edges gilt, joints restored, very good; [8], 1-35, [1], 39-90, 43, [1]; [6], 39, [1]pp.

Cockle 125; ESTC S118094; ESTC S103558.
