[Post Office, Sydney].
[c.1890].
The Sydney post office was built in stages from 1866-1891 by architect James Johnstone Barnet (1827-1904). Intended to stand as a symbol of the city, the construction brought great conflict and controversy as Parliament raised objections to many of the carved panels, calling them 'tedious' and 'offensive.' The Post Master General disagreed, and the carvings remain today.
