The Monastery of St. Sabba, Palestine
c.1960's
Near Jerusalem, between the town and the Dead City, one finds at the end of a Canyon, the Monastery of St. Sabba, built by the Emporer Justinan. The Saint is supposed, in the 5th century, to have lived in a cave with a lion in this neighbourhood for many years. Anchorites inhabited similar caves prior to the building of the Monastery. No women are allowed in the Monastery. The Arab population all around is Christian. It is now a Greek Orthodox Monastery. (description on reverse).
Gelatin silver print. 11cm x 11.5cm. Photographer's ink signature and printed description on reverse.
