The Guard's Detachment of His Majesty's honorary Escort was formed on May 11, 1877, at the beginning of the Russo-Turkish War, with the purpose of providing security for the main headquarters of the front-line forces during Alexander II's stay there. After the Emperor left the headquarters in December same year, the detachment that consisted of two companies of infantry, half-squadron of cavalry, half-company of sappers and of infantry artillery, was in service to the Commander in Chief of the front-line army. The detachment was disbanded on November 29, 1878.
Nikolay Matskevich (1843 - 1885) served in the Guard's Detachment of His Majesty's honorary Escort, and was engaged in crossing of the Danube river by the Russian army in June 1877.
Rare. WorldCat locates only one copy outside Russia – in NYPL. We could not trace any other copies available on the market either in Russia or in the West.
